Folkstar Embossed slimline card w/video by Jeni

Hi, I have two slimline cards using the slimline Folkstar coverplate die by Catherine Pooler. I actually have four more cards using this die but decided to split them up so the video tutorial wouldn’t be as long. The first two cards use Frost embossing powder by Brutus Monroe.

Watch the video here, or over on YouTube.

I knew as soon as I swatched out the Frost Blue embossing powder that I wanted to emboss a piece of card to go behind a cover plate die cut. The shimmer effect you get when this embossing powder hits the light is amazing!

Heat embossing

First, I die cut the Folkstar slimline die from Neenah 80lb card and pushed my embossing ink pad all over. Then poured over the Frost embossing powder and heat set. It doesn’t matter if this isn’t a perfect coverage. Let the embossing powder cool down, then smoosh on some more ink and cover with more embossing powder.

You can repeat this as many times as you wish. Just remember to let each layer cool before adding more embossing powder. The previous embossing powder will also heat up quicker and help melt the fresh (unmelted) embossing powder faster. I also heat embossed a slimline piece of Neenah card for another card.

Adding dimension

To add more interest, I trimmed some small foam squares in half and placed them behind the Folkstar die cut. Adhering the embossed die to a plain white piece of card, and the plain white die cut to the embossed slimline card. (These foam squares are old ones from my scrapbooking days – they still have some adhesive but not enough to hold onto the embossing. I will add small dots of strong liquid glue to hold everything securely).

For the sentiment, I picked the Happy and Holidays from the Pinkfresh Studios Phrase Builder Happy die set. On the card with the embossed background, I coloured the sentiment word die with Hot Tub ink. I found the sentiments did not stand out against the background. The Pearl Aqua Pigments is still on my desk. I added a few drops onto my craft mat and swiped the die cut words through. Leaving these to dry.

The full card with the Frost embossed background has the white Folkwave die cut, and the Hot Tub coloured sentiment that was smooshed through Pearl watercolour.

The white card with the embossed Folkwave die cut has the white sentiment that was smooshed through the same Aqua Pigment watercolour. For some shimmer, but not too much. Adhere both sentiments with strong liquid glue.

Making the card

I will adhere both to a slimline card base, 3.5 x 8.5” made from Brutus Monroe Not Your Mama 130lb card.

I have another two cards using the same slimline die for you next week. Have you joined the slimline craze? Share your cards with us at the Paper Tree Tribe group on Facebook, and use the #thelittlepapertree on Instagram.
