Earlier this month we introduced Trinity Stamps to The Little Paper Tree, and this sweet fun gnome is just one of the new stamps we have in stock. There is a corresponding video tutorial for this card which you can watch in HD over at YouTube. If you are here from YouTube and are looking for the bonus card – it is below the tutorial for the Bright Gnome card.
Stamping & Colouring
First, I stamp the gnome and butterflies from The Bright Side stamp by Trinity Stamps with Midnight black ink onto Bristol smooth card. I love using Catherine Pooler inks to colour with. Gently push on the lid of a closed ink pad to transfer some ink to the inside of the lid. Then use either the blender pen or a paintbrush and water to pick up the colour. I prefer using the blender pen as I don’t need a pot of water on my desk.
The ink colours I use are from the Life of The Party and Foundation collections. The sunflowers are Tiara and Tutti Frutti. The grass blades are Lime Rickey and leaves are Grass Skirt. With Tutti Frutti and Something Borrowed for the hat, and Flirty Fuchsia for the shoes (with Something Borrowed for the soles) and sleeve cuffs.
From the Art Girl video I shared last week I know Sand Castle is a good basic skin tone colour. For this gnome, I mixed a tiny bit of It’s A Girl with Sand Castle for his nose and hands to add a tiny bit of warmth to the Sand Castle colour.
I colour all the butterflies with Flirty Fuchsia and Something Borrowed and as I only use three on my card I have a couple that I can keep for a future card. I will keep these with the stamp set.
Ink Blending
Because I knew my focal panel would be a bright white card, I want a vivid and bright background. I have my swatches from the Ink Blend colour combo mini-series, so I can hold the swatches to the card and see which I feel will look better. With the gnome and flowers on the white card (not adhered yet) I can see that the colour blend I want to use is from the Carnival ink colours.
The colours I use are Limoncello, Mardi Gras and All That Jazz. Working on my craft sheet, I blend on Limoncello first covering the top of the card, then add Mardi Gras and go back to Limoncello to blend the yellow and green colours. I don’t have to blend over the whole of the card as the focal panel will cover the middle. The brush size I use are the ones from the 2 pack of Life Changing blending brushes. At the bottom I blend on All That Jazz and blend this colour with Mardi Gras. Then attach to a standard A2 card base.
Focal Panel
The Sprinkles, Good Things and A-Maze-ing mini cover plate dies contain a rounded rectangle die. (The Sprinkles has a dotted detail). I love using this as a focal point on my cards. I die cut from bright white card and stamped the sentiment from The Bright Side stamp at the bottom. This panel is adhered flat to the ink blended background. The gnome is popped up with foam tape, and the butterflies are also on small white foam squares for some dimension.
Bonus Gnome Card
I want to colour this gnome in every colour combination there is, and couldn’t stop at just one gnome. A slimline card front was on my desk, and I stamped the gnome at the bottom, the sentiment and a fluttering of butterflies. The gnome is coloured with the same colours as above, but using less colour for a lighter tone. The only difference are the hat, cuffs and shoes are Mardi Gras and All That Jazz. I messily ink blend around the gnome and over butterflies with It’s A Boy. Messily ink blend to give the illusion of fluffy clouds. Since I blended over the butterflies with blue ink, I colour the butterflies with Tiara to create green butterflies.
